What is the purpose of the “Back To New” gives back to PoP campaign?

We’re going to raise $25,000 to build a school for children in developing countries who do not have the same access to education that we do in America. Education is a global right, and I would not be where I am today without the teachers and professors who I’ve been able to learn from. We’re going to rally our schools for their schools!

How can you contribute to the “Back To New” gives back to PoP campaign?

There are multiple ways to join the cause!

  1. You can purchase my “Back to New” Remix on Beatport, here.
  2. You can donate directly to the $25,000 goal on my fundraising page, here.
  3. You can rally students on campus to create your own fundraiser for the campaign. For example, when I played at Fordham University’s Spring Concert, members of the Campus Activities Board sold glow sticks to students and donated $500 towards the cause. Get creative and tap into your campus network!

When will I stop donating proceeds from Beatport sales to the campaign?

Never! All proceeds from my “Back To New” remix on Beatport will go towards building a school with Pencils of Promise. I will personally match all purchases until we reach our initial goal of $25,000, but even after the $25,000 is raised, any additional proceeds from song sales will still go to Pencils of Promise. Also, Pencils of Promise guarantees that 100% of online donations will go directly toward building schools—not administrative costs or fundraising events.

Will the “Back to New” (3LAU Remix) be available for sale anywhere else?

Yes, my “Back To New” remix will be available for sale on iTunes 2 weeks after the song is released on Beatport. All proceeds from my “Back To New” remix on iTunes will also go to Pencils of Promise. Any and all money that I make from the sale of this song will go to Pencils of Promise…forever.

If $25,000 is raised, how will each dollar be used?

Every dollar of the $25,000 raised will be utilized for the construction of the school, which includes labor and supplies. Pencils of Promise will provide an itemized budget for the project so you can literally see where each dollar goes. Pencils of Promise raises its own funds that enable the research, strategy, and negotiations required to build each school.

If $25,000 is raised, where will the school be built?

Pencils of Promise currently builds schools in Laos, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Based on our conversation at the Pencils of Promise office, they have a number of prospective school sites coming up in Central America so our project will most likely be in Nicaragua or Guatemala. You can learn more about Pencils of Promise’s assessment of communities in need on their web site, here.

If $25,000 is raised, when will the school be built?

The exact date on which Pencils of Promise can break ground on a new school depends on a few factors: government approval in the destination country, coordinating labor/materials in the destination community, and Pencils of Promise’s overall plan for building across the three countries. We can most likely break ground on a new school within two months of raising $25,000.

How will you know when the school is completely built?

You will be able to follow the progress on our project page on the Pencils of Promise web site. As soon as the $25,000 is raised I will update this answer with the link to our project page. I will also post updates to my blog on www.3LAU.com as well as on my Facebook page and Twitter.

How can you be more involved with Pencils of Promise?

Pencils of Promise offers many ways to get involved, and you can learn all about them at http://www.pencilsofpromise.org/join-the-movement. Also, Pencils of Promise is about to launch a new program called The Impossible Ones, which challenges you to take on an “impossible” task if your personal fundraising goal is met. For instance, you could say “I will skydive in a polka-dotted onesie if I raise $10,000 to fund a classroom!”
